Source Water Protection

Source Protection Committee

Mission

The Source Protection Committee exists to ensure an open process is followed in the development of reasonable, science based policies that protect municipal sources of drinking water now and into the future.

The Source Protection Committee is responsible for developing three key pieces of documentation that will complete the source protection planning process:

1. Terms of Reference

Lays out who will be responsible for what part of the Source Protection Plan and how the work will be conducted. (Approved June 29, 2009)

2. Assessment Report

The identification and assessment of threats to local drinking water sources and how to address them. This will involve heavy public and municipal consultation. (Due late 2010)

3. Source Protection Plan

Includes policies to address threats to drinking water. This will include broad consultation with the public. (Due in 2012)

The Source Protection Committee will be supported by Conservation Authority staff and scientists as well as working groups who will help them developing these documents.

All three of these three documents will involve a very open public consultation process that will include announcements in local newspapers, public information sessions, and updates to this website.

The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (with representation from the Black River watershed), Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority and Severn Sound Environmental Association, all acting as as Source Protection Authorities, will be responsible for reviewing these documents and recommending them to the Ministry of Environment for approval.

Once the Ministry of Environment has granted approval, it will be up to municipalities to implement them.
