Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority

In response to requests from local communities, the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) was formed on May 5, 1960 and has played an important role in providing conservation services to help protect & manage the natural environment of the Nottawasaga River watershed. It is a local, watershed management agency that delivers services and programs that protect and manage water and other natural resources in partnership with government, landowners and other organizations. Legislative framework is provided through Section 20. (1) of the Conservation Authorities Act that allows the NVCA to establish and undertake, in the area over which it has jurisdiction, a program designed to further the conservation, restoration, development and management of natural resources other than gas, oil, coal and minerals. R.S.O. 1990, c. C.27, s. 20.

The Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority's watershed is a large geographic area, approximately 3700 sq. km, with jurisdiction in 18 municipalities. It is a non-governmental agency funded mainly through municipal levies and self generated revenues with some additional funding from provincial and federal grants. The NVCA is governed by a 26 member Board of Directors appointed from the respective municipalities. Board members have a very important role and responsibility to represent the interests of their municipalities, consider the interests and needs of the Conservation Authority, and establish an effective reporting relationship with their municipal council and staff. An Executive Committee is elected from the Board of Directors and consists of a Chair, Vice-Chair and 5 members.

The activities of Conservation Authorities may be described in terms of environmental protection, water resource management and lifelong learning and recreation. Our vision is “Conserving our Healthy Waters”, and in cooperation with our member municipalities and residents, we strive to achieve our mission of “Working together to value, protect, enhance and restore our watershed resources for a healthy, sustainable future". To achieve our mission, we have five major objectives to consider, including:

  • To protect, enhance and restore water;
  • To protect, enhance and restore land;
  • To protect life and property from flooding and erosion;
  • To provide educational and recreational opportunities for the public; and
  • To partner with our watershed municipalities, provincial/federal agencies, Conservation Ontario, and other interested stakeholders to achieve mutual goals

The NVCA maintains a complement of 35 knowledgeable and helpful staff, who are available to offer their expertise to watershed municipalities, residents and landowners.
